COVER EXPLANATION.—In James Hutton’s playground: large channels of the Upper Devonian Old Red Sandstone (forefront) disconformably overlain by an Uppermost Devonian to Lower Carboniferous succession on the Isle of Bute in southwest Scotland. The cliff face is occupied by the Visean Clyde Plateau Basalt, and the Goat Fell Peak that stands in the background on the adjacent Isle of Arran is occupied by a Palaeogene granite. See Jutras, this issue.
