COVER EXPLANATION.—Symmetrical ripples draped by thin, discontinuous mudstones overprint trough-shaped erosion surfaces developed at multiple levels in cross-bedded sandstone (Grès de Châtillon, Pointe du Nid de Corbet, northern France). These features are interpreted to record repeated fluctuations in flow velocity and water depth in the upper part of a tidally modulated, wave-dominated shoreface succession.
