COVER EXPLANATION.—Thin sectioning of a paleosol allows for an examination of micromorphological features, such as this an iron stained root trace from a Cretaceous Potomac Formation paleosol from Delaware, USA (10× magnification). Micromorphology provides important information on preserved paleosol features that can be absent at the macroscopic level, shedding a new light on landscape conditions during formation. This soil likely experienced wetting and drying events creating the redox conditions necessary to mobilize iron during pedogenesis. See Thornburg et al., April issue.
